Multi-body simulation is used to determine loads that result from the mechanisms and mass inertias of a system. These loads can be used to determine deformations and stresses in structural mechanics calculations.

The simulation of multi-body systems also offers the possibility of quickly testing different kinematics and finding optimized solutions. Multi-body simulation can also be used to determine and optimize structure-borne noise levels of periodically operating machines.
The field of multibody simulation and structural mechanics (FEM) are increasingly growing together. In MKS programs, elastic FE components can be integrated, FE codes such as ABAQUS and ANSYS offer the possibility to describe joints. We currently see more of a trend towards adopting the MBS functionality in FE programs and investigating the effect of kinematic loads directly on the FE model.
