MASIMRO

Development of innovative composite material systems in a new type of roller shutter box for optimized sound insulation based on a numerical simulation method to be developed

Project duration: 2022 - 2024

Masimro funding project

The project aims to develop a new type of roller shutter box that significantly improves sound insulation without compromising thermal insulation or load-bearing capacity. Urban residential buildings place high demands on sound insulation due to increasing noise pollution. Until now, roller shutter boxes have been a weak point in the building envelope, as they can reduce the sound insulation of windows by up to 10 dB. While lightweight construction boxes offer advantages in terms of integration and weight, their sound insulation remains inadequate. Solid construction kits, on the other hand, deliver better acoustic results, but have other disadvantages.

As part of this project, new and innovative material composites are to be researched that combine the strengths of lightweight and solid boxes and thus enable improved sound insulation. This will be accompanied by the development of a new, optimized geometry and structure of the roller shutter box that takes into account the entirety of the component. This should result in a product that meets the current requirements for sound insulation, thermal insulation and load-bearing capacity in equal measure.

Another focus is the development of a modern simulation method that enables the acoustic properties of the roller shutter box to be calculated precisely and quickly. This method should not only shorten development times, but also reduce the costs of testing by digitally mapping and optimizing the real sound insulation.

The ultimate goal of this project is to introduce an innovative shutter box that offers an unprecedented level of sound insulation through its revolutionary design, without neglecting other essential properties. This development will make an important contribution to improving the quality of life in urban living spaces and sets new standards in the construction industry.

As part of the project, Merkle CAE Solutions will develop an innovative method for the fast and economical calculation and design of sound-optimized composite structures. The focus will be on integrating measured material parameters from the project partners into the simulation environment and carrying out numerical simulations, ranging from simple test setups to complex structures such as roller shutter boxes.

Merkle CAE Solutions will analyze the material properties and composites and compare different simulation approaches to find the most efficient approach for the sound calculations. The aim is to develop a simplified but precise simulation method that enables economical and simulation-based development.

The planned simplifications of the simulation methods will be validated using complex simulations and experimental results from the project partners in order to further optimize the simulation effort. In addition to improving sound insulation, aspects of thermal insulation will also be included in the development of a new type of roller shutter box. The innovative core of the project is the simplification of complex acoustic simulations and the derivation of precise results for the optimization of sound insulation.
