Wooden outer packaging for goods was used as early as the 18th century. They protect and facilitate transport by sea, land and air. Over the years, a standard for rail containers developed in the 20th century as the railroads became increasingly interconnected. Great Britain was the pioneer in 1920 and established a kind of standard for such containers with the "Railway Clearing House".
Nowadays, a container serves for much more than just transportation & trade. Designed as living space, office or school building, they offer a good opportunity for temporary expansion of space. As a progressive example, the construction of soccer stadiums is leading the way (Qatar - World Cup 2022 Link>>)
Another application is special containers for industry or the military. Heavy installations are made in these containers. Therefore, especially transport load cases have to be verified.
Whether storm, transport, snow or their own weight: containers must withstand a variety of loads. In order to ensure safety and avoid accidents, it is generally essential to have a verified stability certificate in accordance with Eurocode for individual containers or container complexes. This can be done for each installation case as an individual static or generally via a type static.
We are happy to offer you these stability verifications as individual structural analysis, type structural analysis or as an extension to an existing structural analysis in compliance with standards and verifiable according to Eurocode 3 using the FEM.
Our approach has already been recognized and confirmed by many testing structural engineers.
In a previous article "Fire simulation and smoke extraction" we reported in detail about the CFD method for fire simulation. In this article, we also explain why optimal smoke extraction is absolutely necessary.
The fire case must also be verified for temporary structures such as containers. This can be investigated efficiently and realistically in individual cases with a flow simulation. Optimizations and hazard detection are thus possible at an early stage.
