In materials, the term "creep" refers to the time- and temperature-dependent deformation of a material under constant load. These deformations occur in metallic materials, such as steel, but also in concrete, plastics, ceramics and wood.

The changes in shape caused by creep in these materials must, in principle, be taken into account in the component design, since the behavior of the respective objects is influenced, in some cases considerably.

Depending on the material, creep is influenced by different factors. For example, creep in concrete is triggered by structural transformations and rearrangement of water. In contrast, metals and ceramics tend to creep as a result of a thermally activated process.

One key figure for creep is the creep modulus or creep index.
